I was speaking to the design director of one of my clients and we were discussing inspiration. What really is inspiration ? Where do you get it? Can you really be inspired to design a shoe based on a beautiful landscape or an ocean scene? Are you moved by an art piece that brings you an uncontrollable urge to draw some sexy stilettos or a pair of sneakers?
I didn’t really know how to answer that question at that moment because it varied. Sometimes, I am inspired by a furniture piece. At times, I will see a belt, a top, a thing, and will be inspired to do a quick pencil sketch in my sketch book. Sometimes it just comes to me as I sit and stare into blank drawing paper. There is no specific formula.
After that conversation, I happen to get a very bad cold. I was bed ridden for a few days and sketching shoes was not on my mind at all. I rented some movies, sat home, and overdosed on soup. One of the movies I happen to rent was Twilight. While I was sick, coughing uncontrollably, and eating a Ricola every other second, I was immersed in this movie. Yeah, it’s no Academy Award winning film, but it was more of the feel of the film. It’s darkness and mysteriousness. I could not resist my creative thirst to draw. I had no idea Vampires could bring on this frenzied inspiration.
Prior to seeing Twilight, I had also been interested in a clothing brand called Skin Graft. They have a retail store near my office and I enjoy perusing the shop for it’s beautiful details; fur corsets, luxurious leathers, and hardware. I also had seen their fashion show in Los Angeles which was also dark and mysterious. I decided to sit down and put some drawings together that mixed the feel of the movie and the design elements of Skin Graft.
Since being a creative is how I make a living, I don’t really think about it, I just do it. Her question, gave me the opportunity to take a step back and think about what I am doing, why I do it, and how I get there. It was a great moment creatively to sketch this feeling I had, create a board around it , and marker render a few shoes (although quickly) on my own not because I had to for work but for me. I definitely will be doing this more often and will show my progress here.
