A few months ago, I posted Fall 13 trends for women here and here. One of the trends that I spotted were ribbon laces on pumps and flats. I thought it would be great to see some ribbon laces on kids shoes. I wasn’t thinking of  just adding a ribbon lace to a sneaker design, adding it to a ballet flat, or using it as a bow on loafer. I thought it would be great to incorporate the idea into the shoe with a fun pattern design.

While I was looking at the kids collection for Milk magazine, I did see ribbon laces on several shoes for AW 13. However, they were more literal and predictable. The monotony inspired me to sketch a few ideas.  I also have a few others, but, hey, I can’t show you everything!? What would be the fun in that, right?  Here is a peek of a few concepts…

Lace-sketches I was inspired by men’s tailored boots coming out this Fall for women’s. I love brogues, and liked the idea of seeing brogue elements on a boot, and integrating the ribbon lace. I also am in love with the shield trend that you can see here and here. With kids shoes, metal hardware imposes cost issues.   I created a similar idea but in leather. [You can see it in the black shoe with zebra print lace.] It’s fun to have a different print or color ribbon that is removable. You can also do different lengths, and girls could wrap it up their leg if wearing a skirt or tie it around their leggings or jeans, etc. For the sport inspired flat,  I made the ribbon fixed and it can be tied around the front of the ankle. Might be smart to add an elastic strap so the shoe stays on. I do like the sport influenced rubber sole. Gives it an edgy feel to a girly upper.

It’s fun to play with different ideas, and take ideas from women’s shoes, and trends, but not necessarily take it so direct.

What do you think? Do you prefer just taking it down? Or creating ideas for kids?
